Just a few minutes’ drive from the south of Chaweng, one of Samui’s most-established restaurants, now in its 15th year, perches atop a beautiful stretch of coastline. It’s right next to Samui’s most frequently visited scenic point. The restaurant is decidedly picturesque; as you walk through the entrance, you can see the views opening out onto a vast panorama of sea and sky, with the entire bay of Chaweng stretching along to the left. The restaurant is warm, bright and convivial. Welcome to the world of Dr Frogs Bar & Grill.

Wherever you sit in the dining room, those same views will grace your time here. They seem to have stepped out of a beautiful Mediterranean bay, and the restaurant fits in perfectly; the vibe is pleasingly laid-back; the staff welcoming and when it comes to food and drink, everything is excellent.

The menu is well put together, the results of years of the restaurant being run by star chefs. Currently it’s helmed by Khun Narin Boonyang. Young, creative and highly talented, he’s trained under various chefs, and presents top-of-the-range Italian and Thai cuisine at Dr Frogs.

The restaurant opens at 7:00 am daily, and for the next four hours serves up one of the island’s most gourmet breakfasts to guests at Boujis Boutique Resort, a hideaway venue just next door, Italian or Thai? Savour dishes such as smoked salmon and scrambled eggs or the Dr Frogs special breakfast: poached eggs with asparagus, olives, feta, rocket, polenta and toast. It’s the perfect way to start a day.

After breakfast, it’s soon time for long lunches, and then from 6:00 pm onwards, guests come for dinner. But no matter what time you come, staff create a beautiful experience for you. It’s not like the usual visit to a restaurant. You may think you’re coming just for a meal, but everything here is so memorable that it seems like you’ve stepped away from your holiday, no matter how good, and are in some new continuum.

It’s a casual kind of place, as we’ve mentioned, but the food is knock-out, whether it’s Thai or Italian you’re ordering. That’s partly because of the quality. Think Australian-imported Angus Beef Skewers, with bell peppers and shallots, and there’s also herb-roasted lamb tenderloin. For fish, enjoy French oysters, New Zealand mussels as well as fresh line-caught fish
(check out the blackboards for what’s seasonal or good on the day). On the Thai side you’ll find a delicious array of curries, soups, stir-fries as well as spicy salads and a range of appetizers – everyone is bound to find their favourites here.

Whatever you order, you can be sure that Chef Narin keeps to authentic recipes, cooking Thai dishes according to recipes that are packed full of flavour,or Italian ones that are deliciously rustic and filled with regional delights (try the Italian sausage and you’ll think you’re somewhere in Tuscany).

Dr Frogs has almost 100 wines from both the new and old worlds, with something to suit every budget. They have perhaps one of the largest selections of house wines on Samui with over a dozen to choose from. Dr Frogs also organizes all kinds of events, such as birthdays, Italian or Thai? Take your pick from the casual fine dining menu at Dr Frogs Bar & Grill.corporate gatherings and wedding receptions. These can range from very intimate small group events all the way up ones involving a hundred guests or more. Meanwhile, weddings are held on the beach at Boujis Boutique Resort in a totally private setting. Boujis’ wedding planning team will be able to provide you with anything and everything from a simple elopement to a bespoke, complex event for a large family group.

By the way, you don’t need to come to Dr Frogs for a meal or even one of their popular cocktails. This is an ideal place to drop into if you’d just like a coffee and to use the free Wi-Fi and catch up with the world.

You’re welcome to linger, too. As a drop-in spot it’s incomparable. And better still, they serve some of the best croissants around – home-made on the premises. The coffee is definitely as good as you’d get in a dedicated coffee shop, too.

When it comes to Dr Frogs, think epicurean – this is food made from scratch in a time-honoured and heartfelt way. Yet, despite the sophisticated cuisine, the atmosphere is completely relaxed and you’ll feel totally at home. Kick back in the comfy seating and enjoy the excellence that Dr Frogs offers all its guests.
