Magnificent Miskawaan

You don’t have to stay in a five-star hotel to enjoy a five-star holiday.

Undeniably luxurious, unmistakably Thai, Miskawaan Villas delivers the holiday experience of a lifetime thanks to a truly idyllic marriage of comfort, facilities and unforgettable surroundings. Each of the nine beachfront villas enjoys its own individual features and layout, but all of them offer a degree of privacy, personal service and understated style that discerning guests find irresistible.

Discreetly nestled between a backdrop of lush green tropical palms and a pristine ribbon of beach gently lapped by crystal-clear tropical waters, Miskawaan Villas are truly exceptional. Opened in 2007, they have five-star accommodation, location and service and offer the kind of privacy that few high-end resorts can match. Eight of the villas are on serene Maenam Beach on the north of the island and one is on Big Buddha Beach (Bangrak) just minutes from the famous large golden statue.

Sleeping between six and 12 people, they all have a different composition but are furnished to the very highest standards. Take Villa Lotus, for example, this wonderful five-bedroom villa comprises three pavilions surrounding an L-shaped pool guarded by delightful elephant statues. The left-hand pavilion houses a fully-fitted, very modern kitchen and a spacious additional outdoor dining area and comfortable lounge. At the villa’s rear, the two-storey pavilion is home to a games room and twin-bed en-suite bedroom on the ground floor, and on the first floor a double bedroom opens onto its own balcony. Next door are two further twin bedrooms with en-suite facilities, together with a private gym featuring a sauna. The villa’s huge master suite features a Jacuzzi and private office and occupies the entire third pavilion which runs adjacent to the villa’s stunning swimming pool. It also has an enviable 39-metre beach frontage and you’re never more than a few steps away from the ocean.

In the bedrooms there are cotton robes and slippers, Erb brand spa products in the bathrooms and a 50-inch LCD television with satellite connection in the living room. Meals can be taken indoors or under the outdoor sala overlooking the beach. And as well as a villa manager, who lives on-site and is on call 24 hours per day, there are two housemaids dedicated to the villa plus you can have your own personal chef to cook all your meals if desired.

The menu is more comprehensive than most of the restaurants on the island with more than a hundred dishes to choose from. All the Thai specialities you would expect are there as well as regional delicacies and imported Australian beef and lamb. If you’re a keen cook, you can go with the chef to the local markets and learn more about Thai food and even join the chef in the kitchen for a personal tutorial. And when you make a booking, they’ll discuss all of your dietary requirements with you well in advance. With a day or two’s notice they can also source just about anything from around the globe. Lobsters from Maine, Alaskan salmon, green-lipped New Zealand mussels or Mediterranean scallops; just let them know what you like and consider it done. And that also applies to wines, beers, spirits and soft drinks.

Michael Fahey is the General Manager and he was born and raised in New Zealand. He began his working life as a civil engineer and relocated to South-East Asia in the early 1990s and has been here ever since. Originally assigned to project-manage Miskawaan’s initial construction, he took a change of direction and moved into the General Manager’s role as soon as the villas were completed. Michael counts local knowledge, his familiarity with the ‘nuts & bolts’ of Miskawaan and an understanding of the Thai people, culture and language as crucial factors in the success of Miskawaan and the pleasure he gets from living and working on Samui. He gets to know everyone who stays at the villas and the reasons why guests keep coming back are myriad.

“Each villa manager meets our guests at the airport and starts to get to know them right away. Quite a number of returning guests request specific villa managers, maids and chefs as they formed a bond that they are very comfortable with on previous visits. That tells me so much about the levels of service that we provide. In addition, there’s also the privacy, the beach location and the fact that groups of friends or whole families can have a villa and a restaurant all to themselves. We also have motion-sensor infra-red cameras on all external boundaries and a guard patrol throughout the evening and night, ensuring that our guests always feel very secure. And we understand that sometimes it’s the extra details that make all the difference when it comes to feeling well looked after. Our guests tend to be the kind of people who enjoy the finer things in life, which is why we always go the extra mile to provide additional optional services direct to the villas – services such as a personal chauffeur, an experienced masseuse or even a jet-ski for an afternoon’s adrenalin rush.”

With a group of friends or family it’s also very good value-for-money which a five-star resort couldn’t compete with. They also have a series of promotions running throughout the year offering everything from free nights to discounts on early bookings or longer stays and rewards for returning guests. Miskawaan is also a popular destination for weddings and somewhere like Villa Lotus can hold around 60 guests comfortably for a beach wedding ceremony and evening reception. And if you book well enough in advance you could take over the whole estate making it a very exclusive and memorable occasion.

Private villas are very much in vogue and offer levels of personal service and satisfaction that are difficult to find in hotels. Michael and his team at Miskawaan have created an exceptional experience for discerning travellers and one that is definitely closer than you think.
