There’s something truly romantic about a beach wedding. Images of white linen and scattered rose petals come to mind. Not to mention a relaxed atmosphere and that inimitable island feeling. It’s all well and good tying the knot in your hometown, but for those couples looking for something different, nothing beats a wedding in paradise.

Aside from the obvious aesthetic benefits of a wedding on Samui, there’s also the cost factor. Couples find that the cost of their entire wedding comes to about a fifth of the price of a wedding back home, including flights and accommodation.

And then there’s the fact that the happy couple don’t have to up-and-leave for their honeymoon, because they’re already at a dream destination. So they don’t have to travel when all they want to do is rest and relax after their big day. They can go straight from the ceremony to their fabulous honeymoon pool villa.

Often couples want the venue to be in a secluded enough spot to be intimate and private, but also close enough to the hustle and bustle so they and their guests can access the bars and restaurants on other nights during their stay. That’s where a resort like New Star Beach Resort comes in.

‘New Star’ is located on Chaweng Noi Beach, just south of Chaweng, and offers some great wedding packages. Not to mention it’s located on a particularly wide stretch of beach, which makes for a perfect ceremony venue. There are three main types of wedding on offer: Barefoot Wedding, Western Wedding and Thai Wedding, each with their own unique features.

The Barefoot Wedding is a simple ceremony on the beach at sunset, and is perfect for those renewing their vows. As part of the package couples get a wedding planner, decorated wedding venue and master of ceremonies. They also get the bride and groom’s bouquet and corsage, a flower tray for the wedding rings, a two-pound wedding cake, the wedding certificate and a flying lantern ceremony, which takes place after the wedding.

For a more grand affair, there’s the Western Wedding Package. This includes all that was mentioned in the Barefoot Wedding Package and much more. Additional elements include a photographer, who will give the couple 72 digital pictures on a CD along with an album, make-up and hairstyling for the bride, a couples massage at the resort’s Akiira Spa and one additional free night on the property, including a romantic dinner for two by the sea. They even get nice little extras like a wedding signature book and a complimentary room upgrade.

Some couples want something that echoes the local culture, and for them there is the Thai Wedding Package. This ceremony includes everything from the Western Wedding Package, along with a Thai monk blessing, traditional long drum parade, Thai water ceremony and traditional Thai-style garlands for the bride and groom.

Generally speaking, couples arrive two to three days before the big day to get comfortable on the island and accustomed to the layout of the resort. And when they first set eyes on the beach ceremony venue they are immediately struck by just how wide the beach is, which allows plenty of space for the congregation, and an impressive aisle that meanders between palm trees.

Deciding on what food to serve at a wedding can be a pain. But when marrying in a stunning resort where everything is taken care of, you don’t have to give it a second thought. A buffet is the most popular option, because guests can choose what they want, but it also makes for more of a sociable dining experience, as people can move around and talk with different guests.

Samui has a lot of fun activities, both sporting and nightlife, so if a couple want to have bachelor and bachelorette parties, New Star can sort it out for them. They have all the local knowledge and contacts to create a perfect day or night out. Recently, for example, they booked a private boat trip that took a group of bachelors to the outlying islands. They also have contacts with swanky bars on the island and will even organise drop-off and pick-up too, for a hassle-free party night.

Planning a wedding is about creating the dream day for a bride and groom, and for all the guests to leave with great memories too. Flexibility and forward planning is key – two things that couples choosing to marry at New Star have as a given, so they really can get hitched without a hitch.
