In recent years, coconut oil has shot to superstardom in the world of health. Celebrities are using it, nutritionists are recommending it, and patients are praising its many virtues. Some claim that it can help with diabetes, cancer, kidney and liver function, vitamin and mineral absorption, digestive problems, immune function, weight loss, as well as neurological disorders such as Alzheimer’s. From all the glowing reports, coconut oil appears to be a super-food with a multitude of nutritional and medicinal uses. So, with the skin being absorbent, it makes sense that the benefits of the humble coconut and its flesh and oil can be used not only internally, but externally too in the way of body treatments.

Hansar Samui resort uses as much organic produce as possible, not only in its kitchen, but also in its Luxsa Spa – in fact, many of these ingredients are grown right there in the hotel’s own organic vegetable and herb garden. And with Samui boasting more varieties of coconuts than anywhere else in the world, it makes sense that a spa that prefers to use local products has developed a range of treatments and packages based around the coconut.

So if you’re looking to pamper yourself (or someone else) while on the island, do try the Luxsa Spa’s Coconut Healing Package. Here’s why:

The two-and-a-half hour ‘Coconut Healing Package’ (3,500 baht ++) starts with a relaxing floral footbath using essential oils, followed by half an hour in a herbal steam room. When you’re all hot and steamy and your pores have opened up, sink into a deep, aromatic bath with floating petals, and sip on a pot of herbal tea to rehydrate and cleanse from the inside. Lie back and let the herbs and balmy water do their job of opening up your pores even more and preparing your body and mind for the treatments to follow. Just as you feel ready to doze into dreamland, you therapist will ring a little bell, letting you know you have five minutes left until she returns for the next stage of your treatment.

Next you’ll be scrubbed and polished for an hour with a homemade coconut body scrub, removing dull surface skin cells, rejuvenating the skin, increasing your blood circulation, leaving you soft and tingling all over, and heightening your senses. The coconut fibres do a great job of gently exfoliating, while the rich coconut oils prevent the skin from drying out during this process. Luxsa’s therapists are expertly trained, and apply just the right amount of pressure during the body scrub, concentrating on areas such as elbows, knees and heels where there’s rough or dead skin, but being more gently where the skin is tender, so this is a relaxing and painless process.

A wash under the high-pressure rain shower is next to rinse the coconut scrub. Now your skin is ready to absorb the rich coconut cream during your hour-long massage, when all your tension and stress melts away under the expert touch of your therapist. Prior to your treatment, you’ll be asked by the spa manager how you prefer the pressure during your massage, and at any time if you’d like the massage a little firmer or softer just let your therapist know. Coconut oil and cream are excellent for massage, as they are an effective moisturiser on all types of skin, including dry skin.

Should you not have the time for the full package, or prefer to have only a massage, there’s the option of a 90-minute coconut cream massage (2,800 baht ++), so you can still unwind and enjoy the benefits of the coconut with this shorter package.

What’s unique about Luxsa Spa is that the treatments are customised for each client based on information given on the pre-treatment form. According to Thai medicine and healing, the four body elements of earth, water, air and fire need to be balanced throughout life. Spa Manager

Khun Jern, works out which is your element, based on birth date as well as other factors and this will determine which herbs, spices and other products are used in order to benefit the most from the treatments. In the case of the Coconut Healing Package, this will be in the form of the herbs used in the bath as well as the steam room, and also in the herbal tea served.

If you’d prefer your spa treatment with the breeze in your hair and a view of the beach, then try out the new ‘Luxsa Spa Beach Menu’, which can be enjoyed, as the name suggests, alongside the pool in a sala overlooking beautiful Bophut Beach. You’ll find various massage options available, as well as a foot scrub to make feet ready for summer sandals. Highly recommended is the ‘Beachside Signature Massage’, which is a pre-sun tanning massage using Samui virgin coconut oil. It’s a perfect way to start your holiday with a top-to-toe circulation boost, and helps to prevent sunburn, overcome jetlag and relieve stiffness and aches and pains from travelling. It’s a gentle and soothing massage that brings together elements of aromatherapy and lymphatic massage, combined with the therapeutic qualities of oriental aromatic essential oils. It’s designed to strengthen the body’s vital energy and leave you with a renewed spirit.

Like the rest of Hansar, Luxsa Spa is tastefully decorated with a minimalist look using natural elements and an ‘Africa meets Asia’ feel. Attention to detail is noticeable, such as fragrant oil burners, iPod with relaxing music next to the deep floral bath and bowls of floating flowers under the face opening of the massage beds, so you’re not staring at the therapist’s pedicure. Add to that, candles and subdued lighting, thick fluffy towels, gowns and slippers as well as impeccable service, and premium spa products, and you can see why Luxsa Spa has become one of the spas of choice on Samui for the discerning spa-goer.
